Inference
When Olivia reached the platform, the train doors were already closing. -> Olivia arrived too late to board the train.
Tekst nie mówi "she missed the train", ale opis sytuacji wprost na to wskazuje.
Jak wnioskować bez zgadywania?
- znajdź fakty w tekście
- połącz je logicznie
- wybierz najostrożniejszy wniosek, który z nich wynika
- odrzuć odpowiedzi wymagające dodatkowych założeń
After moving closer to work, Jake sold his car and bought a monthly public transport pass.
suggests that, implies that, we can infer that, it can be concluded that, probably / most likely.
Attitude
Attitude to nie tylko positive i negative: enthusiastic, critical, sceptical, concerned / worried, disappointed, surprised, amused, neutral / objective, optimistic, cautiously optimistic.
Jak rozpoznać attitude?
- zwracaj uwagę na przymiotniki oceniające
- szukaj słów typu fortunately, unfortunately, surprisingly, disappointingly
- zwróć uwagę na kontrast: I expected..., but...
The new app looks impressive, but after a week of using it I still cannot see how it improves on the free version. -> sceptical, unconvinced.
I had expected the exhibition to be interesting, but it was far more original and engaging than I had imagined. -> very positive, impressed.
Purpose
to inform, to describe, to explain, to recommend, to encourage / persuade, to warn, to complain, to criticise, to entertain, to invite, to advise.
Inform czy persuade?
- inform: The museum opens at 10 a.m. and tickets cost £8.
- persuade: If you're looking for an unforgettable day out, don't miss the city's newest museum.
Purpose fragmentu
- Why did the author write this text? - cel całego tekstu
- Why does the author mention X? - funkcja jednego przykładu
- Why is paragraph 3 included? - rola konkretnej części
Autor opisuje własny błąd, aby pokazać, czego unikać -> to warn, to illustrate a problem.
Dystraktory - inference
- odpowiedź jest zbyt mocna: always, never, everyone, completely
- ignorowanie końcowej oceny po however lub but
- mylenie neutralnego opisu z aprobatą
- wybieranie very enthusiastic, gdy autor jest tylko cautiously positive
Dystraktory - purpose
No proof = no answer.
Trening 1 - inference
Sophie had planned to spend Saturday at an outdoor music festival. On Friday evening she checked the forecast, packed a waterproof jacket and put an umbrella in her bag. The next morning, she left home earlier than planned because several train services had been cancelled.
- What can we infer about the weather?
- Why did Sophie leave home early?
Odpowiedzi: spodziewano się złej, deszczowej pogody (kurtka, parasol) · ponieważ odwołane pociągi mogły wydłużyć podróż
Trening 2 - attitude
I was excited when the new sports centre opened because the photos online looked fantastic. The building itself is modern and the staff are friendly, but the changing rooms are far too small and several machines were already out of order during my first visit. I may go back once these problems have been fixed.
- What is the writer's attitude?
- A completely satisfied, B disappointed but not entirely negative, C angry and unwilling to return
Odpowiedzi: mieszany - rozczarowany, ale gotowy wrócić · B (A zbyt pozytywne, C zbyt mocne)
Trening 3 - purpose
Before buying a second-hand phone, always check whether the device can still receive security updates. A low price may look attractive, but using unsupported software can expose your personal data to unnecessary risk. It is also worth checking battery health and whether replacement parts are easily available.
- What is the main purpose of the text?
- Why does the author mention security updates?
Trening 4 - rozszerzenie
For years, city planners treated benches as simple pieces of street furniture. Recently, however, researchers have begun to examine where they are placed and who uses them. A bench near a bus stop may help an older person remain independent, while one in a busy square can encourage strangers to share public space. This does not mean that adding more benches will solve every urban problem. It does suggest, though, that small design decisions can influence how welcoming a city feels.
- What can be inferred about the writer's view of benches?
- What is the writer's attitude to the idea that benches can improve cities?
- Why does the writer mention an older person near a bus stop?
Odpowiedzi z analizą: ławki mają funkcję społeczną wykraczającą poza miejsce do siedzenia (dwa przykłady użycia) · cautiously positive - autor widzi znaczenie, ale zaznacza, że to nie rozwiąże wszystkiego · aby zilustrować, jak drobny element projektowy wspiera niezależność
Trening 5 - wybór odpowiedzi
Maya expected remote work to give her more free time. Instead, she found herself answering messages late into the evening because there was no clear end to the working day. After a few months, she began switching off her work phone at 6 p.m. and taking a walk before dinner. She says this simple routine has made a bigger difference than any productivity app she tried.
- What can be inferred? A works fewer hours now, B needed clearer boundaries between work and private time, C dislikes technology
- Purpose of the final sentence? A to recommend an app, B to show that a simple habit was surprisingly effective, C to explain why Maya changed jobs
Odpowiedzi: B - tekst mówi o granicach, nie o krótszej pracy · B - kontrast z productivity app podkreśla skuteczność prostej rutyny
Mini-checklista
- inference: jakie fakty mam i jaki najbliższy wniosek z nich wynika?
- attitude: jakie słowa pokazują ocenę autora?
