Najważniejsza różnica
Past Simple = co się wydarzyło?
Past Continuous = co było wtedy w toku?
Past Perfect = co wydarzyło się jeszcze wcześniej?
Te trzy czasy często współpracują w narracji. Past Simple prowadzi główne wydarzenia, Past Continuous tworzy tło, a Past Perfect cofa historię do wcześniejszego punktu.
Past Simple - główne wydarzenia
I arrived home.
The phone rang.
Tom opened the door.
We went for a walk and then had dinner.
Past Simple prowadzi narrację do przodu i przedstawia wydarzenia jako zakończone.
Past Continuous - tło i proces
It was raining.
People were walking home.
I was watching TV.
Opisujemy, co działo się wokół danego momentu lub co było wtedy w toku.
Past Simple i Past Continuous
I was walking home when my phone rang.
Was walking to tło lub proces, a rang to wydarzenie.
While I was studying, Tom called.
When I was living in London, I met lots of interesting people.
Nie ucz się mechanicznie: when = Past Simple, while = Past Continuous. O wyborze czasu decyduje znaczenie.
Dwie czynności jednocześnie
While I was cooking, Tom was setting the table.
Dwa procesy trwały równocześnie.
Past Perfect - wcześniejsza przeszłość
When we arrived, the film had already started.
Najpierw film się rozpoczął, potem przyjechaliśmy. Past Perfect pokazuje wydarzenie wcześniejsze.
I realised that I had left my wallet at home.
Tom was hungry because he hadn't eaten breakfast.
Past Perfect często pokazuje wcześniejszą przyczynę sytuacji w przeszłości.
Past Perfect nie oznacza bardzo dawno
In 2020 I visited London.
Nie używamy Past Perfect tylko dlatego, że wydarzenie miało miejsce dawno temu. Potrzebujemy późniejszego przeszłego punktu odniesienia:
Before I moved to England, I had visited London twice.
Dwie czynności nie oznaczają automatycznie Past Perfect
I got up, had breakfast and left home.
Wydarzenia są podane w naturalnej kolejności, dlatego Past Simple wystarcza.
Past Perfect przydaje się, gdy cofamy narrację:
I arrived at school and realised that I had left my homework at home.

Before i after
After I finished my homework, I went out.
After I had finished my homework, I went out.
After samo może jasno pokazać kolejność, więc Past Perfect nie zawsze jest konieczny. Forma z Past Perfect mocniej podkreśla ukończenie pierwszej czynności przed drugą.
Trzy czasy w jednej historii
I was walking to school when I realised that I had left my phone at home.
- was walking - tło,
- realised - główne wydarzenie,
- had left - wydarzenie wcześniejsze.
To jeden z najważniejszych modeli narracyjnych na maturze.
