Zadanie 4. (0-4)

Przeczytaj tekst podzielony na cztery części (4.1.-4.4.). Dobierz właściwy nagłówek (A-F) do każdej części. Uwaga: dwa nagłówki zostały podane dodatkowo.

A. A quiet place created high above street level

B. A temporary experiment that residents refused to lose

C. Food produced where nobody expected it

D. A project designed and built by teenagers

E. A clever way to use a building after closing time

F. An expensive plan abandoned before it opened

4.1. When the top floor of a city-centre car park stopped being used, the local council expected it to remain empty. Instead, a group of residents asked for permission to turn part of it into a garden. Large containers were filled with soil, and within months tomatoes, herbs and even small fruit trees were growing several floors above the traffic. The vegetables are now sold at a weekly market, while some are given to a nearby community kitchen. Visitors are often surprised that such a productive green space can exist on concrete.

4.2. A small public square in Northbridge was closed to cars for six weeks while roadworks were taking place nearby. The council placed benches and planters there so pedestrians could still use the area safely. Local cafés began putting out tables, children played there after school and musicians occasionally performed in the evenings. When the roadworks ended, many residents asked the council not to reopen the square to traffic. After a public vote, the change became permanent.

4.3. In one neighbourhood, the community centre was busy during the day but almost empty after 6 p.m. A local college suggested using its classrooms in the evenings. The same rooms now host language classes, job-search workshops and a weekly repair club. Because the building was already heated and maintained, the project did not require major construction. The centre simply changed its timetable and invited local organisations to share the space.

4.4. The roof of a busy shopping centre has become an unusual reading zone. The idea came from people who wanted somewhere calm to sit during lunch breaks without having to buy anything. Wooden screens reduce traffic noise, and there are benches, shade and shelves with donated books. The space is open to everyone and has proved especially popular with office workers and students who want a short break from crowded streets below.

Zadanie 5. (0-7)

Przeczytaj cztery teksty (A-D) dotyczące miejskiego systemu rowerów. Wykonaj zadania 5.1.-5.7. zgodnie z poleceniami.

Tekst A - CITYBIKE: HOW IT WORKS

Register in the app and pay a £10 refundable deposit. The first 20 minutes of every ride are free. After that, you pay £1 for each additional 30 minutes. Bikes must be returned to an official station. If a station is full, use the app to find the nearest one with an empty space. Users under 16 may only ride with an adult.

Tekst B

Hi Ben, I finally tried the new city bikes yesterday. The bike itself was fine, but returning it was a nightmare. The station near my flat was full, so I had to cycle another fifteen minutes to find a free space. I was already late for dinner. The app showed me another station, which helped, but I wish it had warned me before I reached the first one. I'll probably use the bikes again, just not when I'm in a hurry. - Ella

Tekst C

The CityBike programme has become more popular than expected. According to the council, more than 40,000 journeys were made in its first three months. Because several central stations are often full in the evening, 120 new parking spaces will be added next month. The council is also considering a reduced yearly membership for students, but no decision has been made yet.

Tekst D

Forum post by Liam: If you use CityBike regularly, check the map before you leave home, not only when you want to return the bike. I used to choose the closest station automatically, but now I look for one that has both bikes and empty spaces. Also, set a timer for 18 minutes if you want to keep the ride free. It gives you enough time to find another station if necessary.

A MONTH WITHOUT NEW CLOTHES

At the start of January, I made a simple rule for myself: for thirty days I would not buy any new clothes. I did not consider myself a big shopper, but my wardrobe told a different story. I had shirts I had worn once, jeans bought because they were on sale and several almost identical black T-shirts. The challenge was supposed to save money, yet after the first week I realised it was teaching me something more useful.

My first test came when a friend invited me to a birthday dinner. Normally I would have looked for something new to wear. Instead, I spent twenty minutes trying combinations I had never worn before. I found a jacket at the back of my wardrobe that I had forgotten about completely. That evening, two friends asked where I had bought it. I found that surprisingly satisfying.

Halfway through the month, the zip on my favourite backpack broke. My first thought was to replace it, but that would have broken my rule. A repair shop near my office fixed it in ten minutes for less than the price of lunch. The owner told me that most customers only visit after they have already bought a replacement. I began to understand how quickly we decide that something is useless when it is only slightly damaged.

The hardest moment came during an online sale. A brand I like offered 50% off, and I filled a virtual basket before remembering the challenge. I closed the website, but I kept thinking about the items for two days. Then something interesting happened: by the weekend I could no longer remember exactly what I had wanted to buy. The excitement had been temporary.

When the month ended, I did buy one thing: a pair of running shoes because my old ones were genuinely worn out. I am not planning to stop shopping forever. Instead, I now wait forty-eight hours before buying clothes I did not plan to get. Most of the time, the desire disappears. The challenge did not turn me into a minimalist, but it made me much better at recognising the difference between wanting something and needing it.

6.2. What surprised the writer at the birthday dinner? A. Other people liked an item the writer already owned. B. The restaurant required formal clothes. C. A friend gave the writer a jacket.

6.3. What did the backpack experience teach the writer? A. Repairs can be more difficult than expected. B. People often replace things before trying to repair them. C. Good repair shops are hard to find.

6.4. What happened after the writer closed the sale website? A. The writer regretted the decision for the rest of the month. B. The items sold out immediately. C. The wish to buy the items gradually disappeared.

6.5. What is the main result of the challenge? A. The writer now thinks more carefully before buying clothes. B. The writer has decided never to buy new clothes again. C. The writer buys only discounted products now.

THE LIBRARY OF THINGS

Many people own objects they use only a few times a year: a drill, a carpet cleaner, a projector or camping equipment. In the town of Westford, residents can now borrow such items instead of buying them. The project is called the Library of Things, although there are no novels on its shelves. 7.1. _____

The idea began when a group of neighbours noticed how many useful objects were sitting unused in garages and cupboards. They collected donations and opened for one Saturday in a community hall. More than a hundred people came. 7.2. _____ The organisers therefore decided to create a permanent service.

Members pay a small yearly fee and then borrow items for a few days. Some objects, such as sewing machines, are free to borrow, while more expensive equipment has a small additional charge. Volunteers check every item when it is returned. 7.3. _____

The project has also become a social space. People often stay to ask how to use an unfamiliar tool, and volunteers run short workshops on simple repairs. 7.4. _____ For the organisers, that is just as important as reducing the number of unnecessary purchases.

A. That is why damaged equipment is usually removed immediately.

B. It lends practical objects that people may need only occasionally.

C. Several visitors even offered to donate more equipment on the spot.

D. As a result, people who arrived as strangers often start talking to one another.

E. If something is damaged, they either repair it or send it to a specialist.
