Dopiero potem wybierz zaimek i przecinki.
Defining Relative Clauses
- The student who won the competition is in my class.
- The laptop that I bought last month has already broken down.
Nie stawiamy przecinków. W defining clauses często możemy używać that zamiast who lub which.
Non-defining Relative Clauses
- My sister, who lives in Dublin, is visiting us next week.
- The museum, which opened in 2018, attracts thousands of visitors.
Tę część oddzielamy przecinkami. Nie używamy w niej that i nie pomijamy zaimka względnego.
Who, which i that
| Zaimek | Do czego? | Defining | Non-defining |
|---|---|---|---|
| who | osoby | tak | tak |
| which | rzeczy, zwierzęta, całe wcześniejsze zdanie | tak | tak |
| that | osoby lub rzeczy | tak | nie |
- The teacher who helped me was very patient.
- The book which/that I ordered arrived yesterday.
- My uncle, who works abroad, is coming home for Christmas.
- The woman who works here is my neighbour. -
whojest podmiotem czasownikaworks. - The woman who I met yesterday is my neighbour. -
Ijest podmiotem, awhodopełnieniem.
Jeśli zaimek względny jest podmiotem, nie pomijamy go. Jeśli jest dopełnieniem w defining clause, można go pominąć.
Kiedy można pominąć zaimek?
- The dress that I bought was expensive. -> The dress I bought was expensive.
- The people who we invited all came. -> The people we invited all came.
Nie można pominąć zaimka, jeśli sam wykonuje czynność:
- The people who live upstairs are very quiet.
- Nie: The people live upstairs are very quiet.
W non-defining clauses zaimka nie pomijamy: My laptop, which I bought last year, still works perfectly.
Whose, where i when
- I know a girl whose brother is a professional athlete.
- The company whose offices were damaged has reopened.
Where może zastąpić in/at which po rzeczowniku oznaczającym miejsce:
- This is the cafe where we first met.
- This is the cafe in which we first met.
When odnosi się do czasu:
- I remember the day when we moved here.
- I remember the day on which we moved here.
Whom i przyimki
W codziennym angielskim często zastępujemy je who albo pomijamy w defining clause.
- The person whom I spoke to was very helpful.
- The person I spoke to was very helpful.
- The person to whom I spoke was very helpful.
Jeżeli przyimek stoi przed zaimkiem, używamy whom lub which, nie that, i nie pomijamy zaimka:
- The company for which I work is expanding.
Which odnoszące się do całego zdania
W non-defining clause which może komentować całą wcześniejszą informację.
- Tom missed the last bus, which meant he had to walk home.
- She got the highest mark, which surprised everyone.
W takim użyciu which nie zastępujemy przez that.
What to nie to samo co that
What znaczy mniej więcej the thing(s) that i nie występuje po rzeczowniku, który już nazywa tę rzecz.
- I understand what you mean. = I understand the thing that you mean.
- The thing that you said was important.
- Nie: the thing what you said.
