Porównaj:
When I arrived at the station, the train left.
When I arrived at the station, the train had left.
The train had left before we arrived.
Kolejność:
- pociąg odjechał,
- dotarliśmy na stację,
- teraz opowiadamy tę historię.
Past Perfect przesuwa nas o krok wstecz względem wydarzenia, o którym już mówimy w przeszłości.
Budowa Past Perfect
Schemat:
had + past participle (III forma)
Forma jest taka sama dla wszystkich osób:
I had worked.
You had worked.
She had worked.
They had worked.
Nie używamy has ani have. Zawsze had.
Skróty
I'd finished.
She'd left.
We'd seen it before.
'd może oznaczać had albo would:
I'd finished before Tom arrived. = I had finished.
I'd like some coffee. = I would like.
Znaczenie pokazuje kontekst.
Przeczenia
had not / hadn't + past participle
I hadn't seen him before.
She hadn't finished.
We hadn't booked a room.
Tom hadn't arrived yet.
Pytania
Had + subject + past participle?
Had you seen him before?
Had she finished?
Had Tom visited London before?
Pytania z WH-:
What had happened?
Where had they gone?
Why had she left?
How long had you known him?
Po had używamy III formy
❌ had went → ✅ had gone
❌ had saw → ✅ had seen
❌ had wrote → ✅ had written
❌ had ate → ✅ had eaten
Zastosowanie
1. Wydarzenie wcześniejsze od innego wydarzenia w przeszłości
Przykład charakterystyczny dla zakresu CKE:
The train had left before we reached the station.
When I got home, my parents had already gone to bed.
She couldn't get in because she had lost her keys.
Tom was hungry because he hadn't eaten breakfast.
When we arrived, the film had already started.
I recognised Anna because we had met before.
Past Perfect nie musi występować w pierwszej części zdania:
The film had started before we arrived.
Before we arrived, the film had started.
2. Wcześniejsza przyczyna sytuacji w przeszłości
Tom was tired because he had slept badly.
Zmęczenie jest sytuacją w przeszłości. Zły sen wydarzył się wcześniej i ją spowodował.
Anna was upset because she had failed the exam.
I couldn't pay because I had left my wallet at home.
The ground was wet because it had rained during the night.
We were hungry because we hadn't eaten all day.
3. Doświadczenie przed momentem w przeszłości
I felt I had been there before.
Punktem odniesienia jest przeszłe felt. Do tamtego momentu już wcześniej tam byłem.
Porównaj:
I've never been to Spain. - do teraz
I had never been to Spain before that trip. - do tamtego momentu
I've visited Paris three times. - punkt odniesienia: now
Before I moved to France, I had visited Paris three times. - punkt odniesienia: then
4. Already
had + already + past participle
When I arrived, Tom had already left.
By the time we got there, the concert had already started.
She had already finished when her boss asked.
Porównaj:
Tom has already left. - do teraz
Tom had already left when I arrived. - do przeszłego momentu
5. Never
I had never flown before that holiday.
She had never lived alone before she moved.
We had never seen so much snow before.
Znaczenie: nigdy do tamtego momentu.
6. Just
I had just sat down when the phone rang.
She had just left when I arrived.
We had just finished dinner when Tom called.
Czynność wydarzyła się bezpośrednio przed późniejszym wydarzeniem.
By i by the time
By + moment w przeszłości
By znaczy „najpóźniej do tego momentu”.
By 1492 Columbus had made many sea voyages.
By 8 p.m., I had finished all my homework.
By the age of twenty, she had visited ten countries.
By Friday, we had completed most of the project.
By then
By then, everybody had gone home.
By then, I had realised something was wrong.
We had spent most of our money by then.
By the time
By the time we arrived, the film had started.
By the time the police arrived, the thief had escaped.
By the time we reached the airport, check-in had closed.
Częsty schemat to by the time + Past Simple, Past Perfect, ale nie ucz się automatu „by the time zawsze oznacza Past Perfect”. Forma musi wynikać z relacji wydarzeń.
First time i superlative
It was the first time...
It was the first time + Past Perfect
It was the first time the neighbours had seen my new flat.
It was the first time she had travelled alone.
That was the first time I had driven abroad.
Porównaj:
This is the first time I have flown. - teraz
It was the first time I had flown. - przeszłość
Tak samo:
It was the second time he had failed.
It was the third time she had forgotten her password that week.
The best/worst... I had ever...
It was the best meal I had ever eaten.
She was the most interesting person I had ever met.
It was the worst hotel we had ever stayed in.
Porównaj:
It's the best film I've ever seen. - teraz
It was the best film I had ever seen. - przeszły punkt odniesienia
Before i after
Reguła „before lub after = Past Perfect” jest zbyt prosta.
Jeśli spójnik jasno pokazuje kolejność, Past Simple może wystarczyć:
After I finished my homework, I went out.
I checked the door before I left.
Możemy też powiedzieć:
After I had finished my homework, I went out.
Before i after same często wystarczają do pokazania kolejności.
To nieprawda.
I got up, took a shower, had breakfast and left the house.
Cztery czynności są w Past Simple, ponieważ opowiadamy je w naturalnej kolejności.
Niepotrzebna wersja:
❌ I had got up, had taken a shower, had had breakfast and left...
Past Perfect naprawdę pomaga, gdy cofamy historię:
I arrived at the airport at 8. Unfortunately, I had left my passport at home.
Główna historia doszła do arrived, a potem cofamy się do wcześniejszego had left.
Past Simple i Past Perfect w narracji
Last Saturday, I went to a concert. When we arrived, we realised that one of us had left the tickets at home.
Główna historia: went, arrived, realised - Past Simple.
| Past Simple | Past Perfect |
|---|---|
| co się wydarzyło? | co było już wcześniej? |
| We arrived at 8. | The train had left. |
| Anna was upset. | She had failed. |
When we arrived, the train had left.
Anna was upset because she had failed.
Present Perfect czy Past Perfect?
I've finished my work. - wcześniej niż teraz
I had finished before Tom arrived. - wcześniej niż moment w przeszłości
I've never seen snow. - do dziś
Before I went to Norway, I had never seen snow. - do tamtej podróży
Konkretna data nie wystarcza
I graduated in 2022.
Sama odległa data nie uzasadnia Past Perfect. Potrzebujemy późniejszego punktu odniesienia:
By the time I moved to London in 2024, I had already graduated.
Past Perfect nie oznacza „bardzo dawno temu”.
Czasowniki statyczne i how long
I had known Tom for years before we worked together.
She had always wanted to travel.
They had owned the house for twenty years before they sold it.
How long had you known Anna before you married?
How long had they lived there before they moved?
Porównaj:
How long have you known him? - do teraz
How long had you known him before you worked together? - do przeszłego momentu
Had had jest poprawne
Pierwsze had jest operatorem, drugie trzecią formą have-had-had:
I had had this phone for only a week when it stopped working.
She had had breakfast before she left.
