podstawa + rozszerzenie

Past Simple to podstawowy czas do mówienia o zakończonej przeszłości. Na maturze przydaje się praktycznie wszędzie.

Matura ustna: Tell me about a memorable holiday.
Writing: Last weekend, I took part in a charity event.
Tłumaczenie: Wczoraj kupiłem nowy komputer.
Transformacja: I last saw Kate two months ago.
Luka: We _____ to London last summer.

I visited London last year.

Wizyta odbyła się i zakończyła, a last year jest zamkniętym okresem.

Budowa Past Simple

W zdaniu twierdzącym:

subject + past form

Dla czasowników regularnych:

verb + -ed

I worked. · You worked. · She worked. · They worked.

  • work → worked,
  • help → helped,
  • clean → cleaned,
  • visit → visited,
  • watch → watched.

Czasownik zakończony na -e otrzymuje tylko -d:

  • live → lived,
  • like → liked,
  • arrive → arrived,
  • decide → decided.

Po spółgłosce -y zmienia się na -ied:

  • study → studied,
  • try → tried,
  • carry → carried.

Po samogłosce dodajemy zwykłe -ed:

  • play → played,
  • enjoy → enjoyed,
  • stay → stayed.

W krótkich czasownikach zakończonych układem spółgłoska + samogłoska + spółgłoska często podwajamy ostatnią literę:

  • stop → stopped,
  • plan → planned,
  • prefer → preferred.

Porównaj open → opened i visit → visited. Przy dłuższych słowach znaczenie może mieć akcent; najlepiej utrwalić najczęstsze formy: stopped, planned, travelled/traveled, preferred.

Czasowniki nieregularne

Nie dodajemy do nich -ed. Trzeba znać drugą formę: go → went, see → saw, buy → bought, write → wrote, take → took.

Najlepiej uczyć się od razu trzech form, np. go-went-gone, take-took-taken, write-wrote-written. Trzecia przyda się w czasach Perfect i stronie biernej.

Read - pułapka

Pisownia się nie zmienia, ale wymowa tak:

  • present read /riːd/,
  • past read /red/.

Yesterday I read the article.

Wymowa -ed

Końcówka ma trzy realizacje:

  • /t/: worked, watched, helped,
  • /d/: played, lived, cleaned,

Did, didn't i pytania

Przeczenia

subject + did not/didn't + verb

I didn't go.
She didn't work.
We didn't see him.

Po didn't zawsze występuje forma podstawowa:

❌ I didn't went. → ✅ I didn't go.
❌ She didn't bought it. → ✅ She didn't buy it.

Did już pokazuje przeszłość.

Pytania

Did + subject + verb?

Did you go?
Did she call?
Did Tom buy the tickets?

Pytania z WH-:

Where did you go?
What did she buy?
Why did Tom leave?
How did you get there?

❌ Where did you went?
✅ Where did you go?

Krótkie odpowiedzi:

Did Kate call? - Yes, she did. / No, she didn't.

Gdy do jest zwykłym czasownikiem:

What did you do yesterday?

Pierwsze did jest pomocnicze, a do właściwe.

Pytania o podmiot

Porównaj:

Who did Tom meet? - pytamy o dopełnienie
Who met Tom? - pytamy o podmiot

Gdy słowo pytające jest podmiotem, nie używamy did:

What did Sarah buy?
Who bought this book?

Czasownik be

Be jest wyjątkiem i nie używa did/didn't.

OsobaForma
I / he / she / itwas
you / we / theywere

I was tired. · She was at home. · We were busy.

Przeczenia:

I wasn't tired. · We weren't ready.

Pytania powstają przez zmianę kolejności:

Was Tom at school?
Were you tired?
Where were you yesterday?
Why was she angry?

❌ Did you be tired?
❌ Did Tom was there?
✅ Were you tired? / Was Tom there?

Zastosowanie Past Simple

1. Zakończona czynność w określonej przeszłości

I saw Tom yesterday.
We visited Prague last summer.
She graduated in 2024.
They arrived two hours ago.
I bought this car yesterday.

Typowe określenia: yesterday, last night/week/year, two days ago, in 2020, on Monday, when I was a child.

Czas może wynikać z kontekstu:

Where did you go on holiday last year?
We went to Italy.

W odpowiedzi nie trzeba powtarzać last year.

2. Zakończona przeszłość bez dokładnej daty

Shakespeare wrote many plays.
My grandfather worked as a teacher.
Mozart wrote more than 600 pieces.

3. Sekwencja wydarzeń

Past Simple tworzy główną linię historii:

I woke up, got dressed, had breakfast and left the house.

W writingu:

Last Saturday, I took part in a charity event. I arrived at school at nine, helped prepare the tables and then sold cakes. At the end, we counted the money and discovered that we had raised over £1,000.

Formy Past Simple prowadzą narrację; Past Perfect może oznaczyć wydarzenie wcześniejsze.

4. Dawne stany

I was very shy as a child.
She lived in London when she was younger.
We had a small house near the sea.
I didn't like vegetables when I was five.

5. Powtarzające się czynności w zakończonej przeszłości

When I was a child, I played outside every day.
We often visited our grandparents.
She walked to school every morning.

Określenia always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never nie oznaczają automatycznie Present Simple. Liczy się okres sytuacji.

6. Czas trwania w zakończonej przeszłości

I lived in Ireland for six years.

I lived there for six years. - już tam nie mieszkam
I have lived there for six years. - nadal tam mieszkam

To kluczowa różnica względem Present Perfect.

7. Historie i narracja

I was walking home when I saw an accident. A car stopped and two people got out.

Was walking tworzy tło, a saw, stopped, got out opisują wydarzenia.

8. Wydarzenia historyczne

The Second World War ended in 1945.
Neil Armstrong walked on the Moon in 1969.
Marie Curie won two Nobel Prizes.

Określenia czasu i pułapki

Ago oznacza „temu” i liczy wstecz od teraz:

I met her two years ago.

Before oznacza wcześniej względem innego momentu:

I had met her two years before.

Mówimy last week, last year, last Monday bez the. Wyrażenie in the last year oznacza zwykle okres prowadzący do teraz i często łączy się z Present Perfect.

Słowa-sygnały pomagają, ale sens jest ważniejszy.

Used to i would

Used to

used to + verb

I used to play football.
I used to live in a village.
She used to have long hair.
I used to be shy.

Past Simple mówi o przeszłości, a used to mocniej sugeruje kontrast z teraźniejszością.

Pytanie i przeczenie:

Did you use to play football?
I didn't use to like coffee.

Po did/didn't używamy use, nie used.

Used to a be used to

I used to get up early. - kiedyś wcześnie wstawałem
I'm used to getting up early. - jestem przyzwyczajony

Used to + verb opisuje dawną sytuację. Be used to + noun/-ing oznacza przyzwyczajenie.

Would dla dawnych zwyczajów

When we were children, we would spend every summer at our grandparents' house.

✅ I used to be shy.
✅ Every summer, we would visit our grandparents.
❌ I would be shy. (jako zwykły odpowiednik dawnego stanu)

Porównanie z innymi czasami

Past Simple a Present Perfect

I saw this film yesterday. - zakończony moment
I've seen this film. - doświadczenie do teraz, bez zakończonego momentu

❌ I have seen him yesterday.
✅ I saw him yesterday.

Did you go to Italy last year?
Have you ever been to Italy?

Past Simple a Past Continuous

The phone rang. - wydarzenie
I was having dinner. - czynność w toku

Razem:

I was having dinner when the phone rang.

Tło lub czynność w toku → Past Continuous. Wydarzenie → Past Simple.

Past Simple a Past Perfect

I arrived, bought a ticket and got on the train.

Jeśli kolejność jest jasna, Past Simple wystarcza. Past Perfect pokazuje wyraźnie wydarzenie wcześniejsze:

When I arrived, the train had already left.

Nie używaj Past Perfect bez powodu.

Past Simple na maturze

Matura ustna

Tell me about a trip you really enjoyed.
Last summer, I went to Italy with my family. We stayed near Rome and spent five days sightseeing. I visited the Colosseum and tried Italian food. My favourite part was the day we spent in the city centre.

Formy went, stayed, spent, visited, tried, was tworzą historię.

Writing

Past Simple przydaje się do opisywania wydarzeń, doświadczeń i historii:

Last weekend, our school organised a charity fair. I volunteered at a stall. At first, we didn't expect many visitors, but over 300 people came. We raised enough money to help a local shelter.

Transformacje

I haven't seen Tom for three months.
I last saw Tom three months ago.

I don't play football anymore.
I used to play football.

Jeśli sytuacja nadal trwa, nie używamy Past Simple:

She started living in London in 2023 and still lives there.
She has lived in London since 2023.
