Porównaj dwa zdania:
I watched TV yesterday.
I was watching TV at 8 p.m. yesterday.
- 19:00 - film nadal trwa,
- 20:00 - film się kończy.
Na pytanie What were you doing at 7 p.m.? odpowiemy:
I was watching a film.
Budowa Past Continuous
Schemat:
was/were + verb-ing
| Osoba | Forma |
|---|---|
| I | was working |
| you | were working |
| he / she / it | was working |
| we / they | were working |
❌ I was work.
❌ I working.
✅ I was working.
Przeczenia
was/were + not + verb-ing
I wasn't working.
She wasn't sleeping.
We weren't waiting.
Pełne formy to was not i were not.
Pytania
Zmieniamy kolejność:
Was/Were + subject + verb-ing?
Were you sleeping?
Was Kate working?
Were they waiting?
Pytania z WH-:
What were you doing?
Where was Tom going?
Why were they laughing?
What was she wearing?
❌ What you were doing?
✅ What were you doing?
Nie używamy did, bo czasownikiem pomocniczym jest już was/were:
❌ Did you were sleeping?
✅ Were you sleeping?
Forma -ing
Zasady są takie jak w Present Continuous:
- work → working,
- write → writing,
- make → making,
- run → running,
- swim → swimming,
- lie → lying,
- die → dying.
Zastosowanie Past Continuous
1. Czynność w konkretnym momencie przeszłości
Yesterday at 8 p.m., I was studying.
Yesterday at 5 p.m., I was swimming in the ocean.
Typowe konteksty: at 5 p.m. yesterday, at that moment, this time yesterday, at midnight, when I called, when we arrived.
Nie wybieraj jednak czasu wyłącznie po słowie-sygnale:
I watched TV from 8 to 10. - przedstawiam całą czynność
At 9, I was watching TV. - patrzę na nią od środka
2. Czynność w toku, gdy wydarzyło się coś innego
I was walking home when I saw Tom.
Was walking opisuje trwającą sytuację. Saw to wydarzenie, które nastąpiło w jej czasie.
I was having dinner when the phone rang.
She was sleeping when I called.
We were driving home when the car broke down.
They were playing football when it started to rain.
When we arrived, most of the guests were dancing.
When I arrived, Tom was sleeping.
It was raining heavily. People were running towards their cars and the wind was blowing. I was walking to the bus stop when I heard a loud noise.
Tło: was raining, were running, was blowing, was walking. Wydarzenie: heard.
W writingu:
I was walking through the park when I saw an elderly man fall. Several people were sitting nearby, but at first nobody knew what to do.
Past Continuous naturalnie ustawia scenę.
4. Dwie równoczesne czynności
While I was cooking, Tom was setting the table.
She was listening to music while she was studying.
I was writing the report while my colleague was preparing the presentation.
Tom washed the dishes while I cleaned the kitchen. - dwa zakończone działania
Tom was washing the dishes while I was cleaning the kitchen. - dwa równoległe procesy
Różnica dotyczy perspektywy, nie mechanicznej obecności while.
5. Tymczasowa sytuacja w przeszłości
At that time, I was living with my parents.
She was working in Germany that summer.
We were staying in a hotel near the beach.
I was studying a lot during that period.
I lived in Madrid for ten years. - cały zakończony etap
I was living in Madrid when I met Laura.
6. Powtarzanie w ograniczonym okresie
During the exam period, I was studying until midnight almost every day.
When Tom was in hospital, we were visiting him twice a week.
That month, I was working late almost every evening.
Always i constantly + Past Continuous
He was always losing his keys.
She was constantly complaining.
They were always arguing.
He always arrived late. - neutralny dawny zwyczaj
He was always arriving late. - powtarzanie z emocją mówiącego
7. Plany i zamiary
I was planning to call you.
We were thinking about moving abroad.
I was considering applying for the job.
They were hoping to travel in June.
I was planning to call you, but I forgot.
8. I was wondering if...
I was wondering if you could help me with this suitcase.
I was wondering if you had a moment.
I was wondering whether you could send me the information.
I was wondering if it would be possible to change the date.
Porównaj bezpośrednie Can you help me? z łagodniejszym I was wondering if you could help me.
Podobny mechanizm występuje w konstrukcji:
I wasn't expecting you today!
When i while bez uproszczeń
Reguła „when = Past Simple, while = Past Continuous” jest fałszywym uproszczeniem.
While
While często podkreśla okres trwania:
While I was studying, Tom was watching TV.
While we were having dinner, the phone rang.
I listened to music while I was working.
When
When może wprowadzać wydarzenie:
I was sleeping when Tom called.
Ale może też wystąpić przy sytuacji trwającej:
When I was living in London, I met Sarah.
When we arrived, everybody was dancing.
Te zdania mają podobną relację czasową:
While I was walking home, I saw Tom.
I was walking home when I saw Tom.
While jest szczególnie naturalne, gdy podkreślamy „w czasie gdy coś trwało”. When często wskazuje moment lub wydarzenie. O czasie gramatycznym decyduje jednak sens.
Interpunkcja:
I was sleeping when you called.
When you called, I was sleeping.
While I was cooking, Tom was cleaning.
Past Simple vs Past Continuous
I walked home. - czynność jako całość
I was walking home. - czynność widziana w trakcie
Porównaj zmianę znaczenia:
When Karen arrived, we were having dinner. - Karen przyszła w trakcie kolacji
When Karen arrived, we had dinner. - Karen przyszła, a potem zjedliśmy kolację
When I saw Tom, he was crossing the street. - już przechodził
When I saw Tom, he crossed the street. - może sugerować późniejszą sekwencję
Kolejne wydarzenia najczęściej opisujemy Past Simple:
I opened the door, walked into the room and sat down.
I worked in a bank for ten years. - cały zakończony etap
I was working in a bank when I met my husband. - sytuacja w toku w danym momencie
Także all morning nie narzuca czasu:
I worked all morning. - cały zakończony okres
I was working all morning. - nacisk na proces
Stative verbs
Czasowniki stanu zwykle nie występują w Past Continuous w swoim statycznym znaczeniu: know, understand, believe, want, need, belong, own, remember, seem, prefer.
❌ I was knowing the answer. → ✅ I knew the answer.
❌ She was wanting to go home. → ✅ She wanted to go home.
❌ We were understanding. → ✅ We understood.
Sama informacja, że coś „trwało”, nie wystarcza. Trzeba sprawdzić rodzaj i znaczenie czasownika.
Część czasowników zmienia znaczenie:
Think
I thought the film was excellent. - opinia
I was thinking about changing my job. - proces rozważania
Have
I had a car. - posiadanie
I was having lunch when she called. - czynność
See
I saw Tom. - zauważyłem
I was seeing a therapist at the time. - spotykałem się regularnie
Taste
The sauce tasted strange. - miała określony smak
The chef was tasting the sauce.

Past Continuous Passive
Strona bierna:
was/were + being + past participle
They were repairing the road.
The road was being repaired.
The house was being renovated when we bought it.
New computers were being installed.
The patient was being examined when I arrived.
Porównaj:
The road was repaired last year. - zakończona naprawa
The road was being repaired when we arrived. - naprawa w toku
To częsta konstrukcja w transformacjach na rozszerzeniu.

- I was wondering if...,
- zmianę znaczenia stative verbs,
- Past Continuous Passive,
- narrację łączącą kilka czasów.
Matura ustna i writing
W historii Past Continuous tworzy tło, a Past Simple prowadzi wydarzenia:
Last summer, I was travelling to Kraków when our car broke down. We were driving along a quiet road and it was getting dark. While my friend was calling for help, I was checking our location. A mechanic arrived and fixed the car.
To naturalniejsza wypowiedź niż ciąg przypadkowych zdań w jednym czasie.
Transformacje
Tom called during dinner.
I was having dinner when Tom called.
Workers were repairing the school.
The school was being repaired.
I had the intention of calling.
I was planning to call.

- Zastanawiałam się, czy możesz pomóc. → I was wondering if you could help.
- Droga była naprawiana. → The road was being repaired.
Poziom podstawowy i rozszerzony
