Zadanie 5. (0-4)
Przeczytaj cztery teksty dotyczące różnych sposobów ograniczania marnowania zasobów. Do każdego pytania (5.1.-5.4.) dopasuj właściwy tekst (A-D).
A. THE LEFTOVER APP
At the end of every day, cafés and bakeries often have food which is still perfectly edible but cannot be sold the following morning.
A mobile app now allows businesses to advertise surprise bags containing these unsold products at a reduced price. Customers reserve a bag without knowing exactly what it will contain and collect it shortly before closing time.
The unpredictability is part of the attraction for many users, although the organisers emphasise that the project's main purpose is to prevent good food from being thrown away.
B. SHARE YOUR JOURNEY
A university introduced an online platform allowing staff and students who travel along similar routes to arrange shared car journeys.
Initially, the main goal was to reduce the number of cars entering the campus every morning. However, a survey conducted after six months revealed another benefit. New students said sharing journeys had helped them meet people before they had established a social circle at university.
C. THE OFFICE SHELF
Employees at one company noticed that unwanted stationery, folders and office equipment were regularly being thrown away when departments were reorganised.
They created a central shelf where staff can leave items they no longer need and take anything that might be useful.
There is no formal system for recording who leaves or takes an object. According to the organisers, keeping the process simple is one reason employees actually use it.
D. WATER AGAIN
During summer, a sports centre uses thousands of litres of water every day in its showers.
A recently installed system collects some of this water, treats it and then uses it to flush toilets and water outdoor plants.
Although the installation was expensive, managers expect it to reduce water consumption considerably over the next few years.

THE DAY I STOPPED USING GPS
I did not deliberately decide to stop using GPS. My phone simply ran out of battery while I was visiting a city I barely knew. I was about forty minutes' walk from my hotel and, for the first time in years, I had no electronic map available.
My immediate reaction was disproportionate panic. I knew the name of my hotel, I spoke the local language and I was hardly in the wilderness. Nevertheless, I had become so accustomed to following a moving blue dot that navigating without it felt strangely difficult.
I bought a paper map from a newsagent. At first, using it was slower. I had to identify street names, work out which direction I was facing and occasionally stop to check where I was. But after fifteen minutes something changed. Instead of watching the screen, I began noticing actual landmarks: a church tower, a square with a fountain and a particularly colourful building.
The next morning, with my phone fully charged again, I decided to repeat the experiment. I used the map to plan a rough route and then put it away. I got mildly lost twice. Both mistakes were easy to correct, and one led me through a street market that I would otherwise never have seen.
When I returned home, I did not delete my navigation apps. They are extremely useful when I'm driving, when I have an appointment or when getting lost would cause a genuine problem. But I have stopped assuming that the fastest route is always the best route.
There is also something satisfying about gradually constructing a mental picture of a place. When I rely completely on GPS, I can visit the same area several times and still have little idea how the streets connect. When I navigate actively, I remember far more.
I am not arguing that technology makes us incapable of finding our way. It simply makes it possible not to practise the skill. And like many abilities, navigation becomes easier when we actually use it.
6.1. Why was the author surprised by his initial reaction?
A. He had already visited the city several times.
B. He was in a situation which was not genuinely dangerous.
C. He could not remember the name of his hotel.
D. He had never previously used a paper map.
6.2. What happened when the author began using the paper map?
A. He became more aware of his surroundings.
B. He reached his hotel much faster than expected.
C. He repeatedly asked local people for directions.
D. He realised the map contained several mistakes.
6.3. Why did the author deliberately avoid GPS the following day?
A. His phone battery was still unreliable.
B. He wanted to test whether he could remember the previous route.
C. He had found navigating without it unexpectedly rewarding.
D. He wanted to visit the same street market again.
6.4. What is the author's main conclusion?
A. Navigation technology should only be used while driving.
B. Paper maps provide more accurate information than digital ones.
C. Getting lost is necessary in order to understand a city.
D. Depending less on navigation technology can help develop spatial awareness.
Zadanie 7. (0-4)

LEARNING TO FIX THINGS
Until recently, my response to almost any broken household object was predictable: replace it.
That changed when my desk lamp stopped working. It was inexpensive, so throwing it away and buying another would have been easy. Yet for some reason I decided to find out what was wrong first. 7.1. ____
The video made the repair look straightforward. In reality, it took me nearly an hour to remove the damaged switch without breaking anything else. At one point, I was convinced I had made the problem worse. Eventually, however, I fitted the replacement part and switched the lamp on. It worked.
The satisfaction was completely disproportionate to the importance of the object. 7.2. ____ I had taken something I did not understand, investigated how it worked and managed to solve the problem.
After that, I began attempting other small repairs. Some were successful, others less so. I ruined an old toaster by confidently removing parts that I later discovered I could not put back correctly. 7.3. ____ It taught me to research a problem properly before reaching for a screwdriver.
I have also learnt to recognise my limits. Electrical repairs involving mains wiring and problems with gas appliances are jobs for professionals. The point is not to repair absolutely everything myself.
Instead, I have become less willing to treat objects as mysterious sealed boxes. 7.4. ____ Even when I eventually decide that professional help or replacement is necessary, I understand more about why.
A. I searched online for the model number and found a repair video showing how to replace the switch.
B. I immediately ordered an expensive set of professional tools.
C. That failure turned out to be almost as useful as fixing the lamp.
D. Now, when something stops working, my first question is usually what might have caused the problem.
E. It wasn't really about saving the cost of a new lamp.
F. Since then, I have successfully repaired every broken object in my home.

A FOREST ABOVE THE CITY
When people imagine a forest, they rarely picture the roof of an office building. Yet one architect believes unused rooftops could play an important role in making cities cooler and greener.
Her experimental rooftop contains more than decorative plants. Small trees, shrubs and grasses have been selected to create a miniature ecosystem. Sensors measure temperature, rainfall and soil moisture.
During hot weather, the roof can be several degrees cooler than nearby conventional rooftops. Plants provide shade and release moisture into the air, while the soil absorbs some rainwater that would otherwise flow directly into the drainage system.
The project has also attracted insects and birds. This was expected to some extent, but researchers were surprised by the variety of species recorded in such a small area.
The architect does not claim that rooftop forests can replace parks at ground level. Instead, she sees them as one of many measures cities can use when space for new parks is limited.
8.1. The roof is monitored using ______________________________
8.2. The vegetation can reduce the amount of rainwater entering ______________________________

WHEN RECOMMENDATIONS BECOME TOO GOOD
Online recommendation systems are extremely convenient. They suggest films we may enjoy, music similar to songs we already like and products based on our previous purchases.
The better these systems become, however, the easier it is to remain inside familiar territory.
I noticed this with music. A streaming service had become remarkably good at predicting what I would enjoy. The problem was that almost everything it recommended sounded vaguely similar. Nothing was bad, but very little surprised me.
I began deliberately listening to albums chosen for reasons unrelated to my previous preferences. Sometimes I selected music from a country I knew little about. At other times, I asked friends with completely different tastes for recommendations.
Naturally, I disliked some of what I heard. But that was partly the point. Personal taste does not develop only through finding more things we already like. It can also change when we encounter something unfamiliar.
Recommendation algorithms are not the enemy. I still use them constantly. But convenience and discovery are not exactly the same thing. A system designed to predict our preferences may not always be the best tool for expanding them.
9.1. What problem did the author identify?
A. The recommendations were becoming increasingly inaccurate.
B. The service repeatedly recommended music he had already heard.
C. The recommendations offered too little variety.
D. Friends disliked the music suggested by the service.
9.2. Why did the author sometimes choose music he expected not to enjoy?
A. He wanted to broaden his musical experience.
B. He wanted to test the accuracy of the algorithm.
C. He planned to write reviews of unfamiliar music.
D. He wanted to understand his friends' preferences.
9.3. What is the author's overall attitude towards recommendation systems?
A. They should be avoided whenever possible.
B. They are useful but have limitations.
C. Their disadvantages clearly outweigh their benefits.
D. They prevent people from developing personal preferences.
