  • Direct: Where does she live?
  • Indirect: Do you know where she lives?

Najważniejsza zasada: po słowie pytającym nie robimy inwersji i nie używamy pomocniczych do, does ani did.

Pytanie bezpośrednie a pośrednie

Pytanie bezpośrednie:

Where is the station?

Pytania pośrednie:

  • Could you tell me where the station is?
  • Do you know where the station is?
  • I wonder where the station is.

W części pośredniej mamy podmiot przed czasownikiem: the station is, nie is the station.

Najczęstsze początki

Pytające

  • Could you tell me...?
  • Can you tell me...?
  • Do you know...?
  • Would you mind telling me...?
  • Do you happen to know...?
  • Have you any idea...?

Oznajmujące

  • I wonder...
  • I'd like to know...
  • I have no idea...
  • I'm not sure...
  • Could you explain...?

Pamiętaj o znaku zapytania tylko wtedy, gdy całe zdanie jest pytaniem. I wonder where he is. jest zdaniem oznajmującym.

Szyk zdania twierdzącego

Po słowie pytającym stosujemy:

question word + subject + verb

  • Where does Tom live? -> Do you know where Tom lives?
  • Why did she leave? -> Could you tell me why she left?
  • What is he doing? -> I wonder what he is doing.
  • When will they arrive? -> Do you know when they will arrive?

Nie:

  • Do you know where does Tom live?
  • Could you tell me why did she leave?

Co dzieje się z do, does i did

W pytaniu pośrednim pomocnicze do, does i did znikają, a czasownik przyjmuje odpowiednią formę.

  • What time does the shop close? -> Do you know what time the shop closes?
  • Where did Anna go? -> Can you tell me where Anna went?
  • Why do they need help? -> I wonder why they need help.

Jeśli do jest zwykłym czasownikiem oznaczającym „robić”, pozostaje:

  • What does he do? -> Do you know what he does?

Pytania z be i czasownikami modalnymi

Czasownik be oraz czasowniki modalne nie znikają. Zmieniamy jedynie szyk.

  • Where is the bank? -> Could you tell me where the bank is?
  • Why are they late? -> Do you know why they are late?
  • When can we start? -> Do you know when we can start?
  • How should I prepare? -> Could you explain how I should prepare?
  • What will happen? -> I wonder what will happen.

Pytania yes/no - if i whether

Gdy w pytaniu bezpośrednim nie ma słowa pytającego, używamy if lub whether.

  • Is the museum open? -> Do you know if / whether the museum is open?
  • Did Tom call? -> Could you tell me if / whether Tom called?
  • Can I pay by card? -> Do you know if / whether I can pay by card?

Nie używamy that:

  • Nie: Do you know that the museum is open? - to pytanie o wiedzę o fakcie, nie odpowiednik „Czy muzeum jest otwarte?”.
  • Tak: Do you know if the museum is open?

Whether czy if

W wielu pytaniach if i whether są wymienne. Whether jest bardziej formalne i stosujemy je obowiązkowo:

  • przed or not: I wonder whether or not he will come.
  • przed bezokolicznikiem: I don't know whether to stay.
  • po przyimku: It depends on whether we have enough time.

Możemy też powiedzieć: I wonder whether he will come or not.

Pytania o podmiot

Jeśli słowo pytające jest podmiotem, w pytaniu bezpośrednim już nie ma inwersji:

  • Who called you? -> Do you know who called you?
  • What happened? -> Can you tell me what happened?
  • Which student won? -> Do you know which student won?

Nie dodajemy did:

  • Nie: Do you know who did call you?
  • Tak: Do you know who called you?

Pytania pośrednie i mowa zależna

Indirect Questions mogą być częścią Reported Speech. Wtedy oprócz szyku twierdzącego może wystąpić backshift.

  • She asked, "Where do you live?"
  • She asked me where I lived.
  • He asked, "Did Anna call?"
  • He asked if Anna had called.

Różnica:

  • Do you know where Anna lives? - grzeczne pytanie pośrednie, bez koniecznego cofania czasu.
  • He asked where Anna lived. - relacjonowanie pytania z przeszłości.

Uprzejme pytania w praktyce

Indirect Questions przydają się w rozmowie i formalnym pisaniu:

  • Could you tell me where I can find the information?
  • Would you mind telling me how much the course costs?
  • Do you happen to know when the office opens?
  • I'd like to know whether accommodation is included.
  • Could you explain what documents I need?

Po Would you mind używamy formy -ing: Would you mind telling me...?

Interpunkcja

Znak na końcu zależy od całego zdania:

  • Could you tell me where he is? - całe zdanie jest pytaniem.
  • I wonder where he is. - całe zdanie jest oznajmujące.
  • I'd like to know when the results will be published. - zdanie oznajmujące.

W środku zdania nie wstawiamy znaku zapytania.

Transformacje krok po kroku

Direct: Why did the meeting end early?

  1. Wybierz początek: Could you tell me....
  2. Zachowaj słowo pytające: why.
  3. Usuń did.
  4. Przywróć czasownikowi formę Past Simple: ended.
  5. Ustaw szyk twierdzący: the meeting ended.

Wynik: Could you tell me why the meeting ended early?

Direct: Is there a problem?

  1. Brak słowa pytającego, więc dodaj if lub whether.
  2. Zmień szyk is there na there is.

Wynik: Do you know if there is a problem?

Najczęstsze błędy
