Najważniejsza idea
| Konstrukcja | Znaczenie | Przykład |
|---|---|---|
| used to + V1 | dawny zwyczaj lub stan | I used to live in Dublin. |
| would + V1 | powtarzana czynność w przeszłości | We would swim every morning. |
| be used to + noun/-ing | być przyzwyczajonym | I am used to getting up early. |
| get used to + noun/-ing | przyzwyczajać się | I am getting used to my new job. |
Used to - dawny zwyczaj lub stan
Used to + V1 opisuje coś typowego lub prawdziwego w przeszłości, co teraz już nie jest typowe albo jest kontrastowane z teraźniejszością.
- I used to play football every Saturday, but now I prefer running.
- She used to be very shy at school.
- We used to have a small house near the sea.
Może opisywać czynności i stany: live, be, have, know, like, believe.
Used to a Past Simple
Past Simple podaje fakt z przeszłości. Used to mocniej sugeruje dawny zwyczaj lub stan:
- I lived in London for five years. - fakt.
- I used to live in London. - dawniej tam mieszkałem, teraz sytuacja jest inna.
Pytania i przeczenia
Najbezpieczniejszy wzór maturalny:
- Did you use to live here?
- I didn't use to like coffee.
Po did/didn't stosujemy use, ponieważ czas przeszły jest już zaznaczony w operatorze.
Would - powtarzające się czynności
Would + V1 opisuje regularnie powtarzane czynności, zwłaszcza we wspomnieniach:
- When we were children, we would spend every summer at our grandparents' house.
- After dinner, my grandfather would sit by the window and read.
Potrzebny jest jasny kontekst przeszłości. Samo would może oznaczać warunek, uprzejmość lub future in the past.
Used to czy would?
Used to pasuje do czynności i stanów. Habitual would najbezpieczniej stosować do powtarzanych czynności, nie stanów.
- I used to be shy.
- I used to have long hair.
- Every morning, we would cycle to the lake.
Naturalny model: We used to spend summers in a village. Every morning, we would get up early and cycle to the lake.

Be used to
Be used to + noun/-ing oznacza być przyzwyczajonym:
- I am used to cold weather.
- She is used to working under pressure.
- We were not used to the noise.
To jest tutaj przyimkiem, dlatego występuje po nim rzeczownik albo -ing.
Get used to
Opisuje proces przyzwyczajania się:
- I am getting used to my new job.
- It took me weeks to get used to waking up at six.
- You will get used to speaking English in class.
Be used to czy get used to?
- I am used to the noise. - stan: hałas jest już normalny.
- I am getting used to the noise. - proces: stopniowo staje się normalny.
- She eventually got used to working alone. - proces został zakończony.
